I think the type of thing you are describing is very common among families whose ancestors came to this country a long time ago, too, poor whites in the deep South or Appalachia, for example. But the rigid controlling tendency are found in all socioeconomic levels. The police are just not as willing to arrest someone in a mansion who hits his wife and kids as they are someone in a trailer park.
