I am not sure that I would have survived my teenage years if I had been forbidden to listen to rock music. I think I would have rebelled even more than I did, and perhaps run away from home.

I do understand that some kinds of music are just disturbing to some people. I personally cannot stand most rap music because it reminds me of the movie Colors and drive-by shootings. I also understand that my daughter likes it, so after I have explained for the thousandth time my objections, I feel like she should be able to listen to it in her room, or when I am not around to be disturbed by it.

In fact, learning how to deal with people liking--and vehemently disliking--things and compromising and being thoughtful and considerate about them seem to be an important part of growing up.

Maybe my feelings on this issue are stronger than your children's were, however. How did they do with this rule in effect?
