Broadcom's video graphics chip supports SDTV, HDTV
LOS ANGELES-Broadcom Corp. has developed a 2D/3D video-graphics subsystem that supports standard- and high-definition displays for North America, Europe and Japan.
The new BCM7020 chip is the first Broadcom product to use the HDTV MPEG technology developed by Armedia Inc., acquired by Broadcom in May. It supports MPEG-2 video, Dolby Digital AC-3 and MPEG audio, 3D graphics and 2D text and graphics. The chip, says Broadcom, can decode several video streams simultaneously, allowing for multiple camera angle views and picture-in-picture applications. The graphics architecture supports multiple windows of text, graphics and video, according to the company.

Broadcom says system designs using the BCM7020 require only an external processor, a network interface card and the desired I/O complement connected via the on-chip PCI bus interface.
