VSNL to take $10 million stake in Project Oxygenoxygen.org What is Project Oxygen?terena.nl VSNL to take stake in Project Oxygen, a US start-up (Saturday, December 18, 1999) Our Bureau in Calcutta(bs) The Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd (VSNL) is considering an initial investment of $10 million in a US-based telecom start-up, Project Oxygen, which is a super Internet link having 32,000 km of submerged global optical fibre cable network connecting a host of the countries in the world. This will to be the world's first optical fibre system with a capacity of 300 gigabytes per second, operating on asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) technology. This was disclosed by the union minister of communication Tapan Sikdar at the inauguration of the Videsh Sanchar Bhavan building of VSNL at Calcutta on Friday. In addition, VSNL is building a country-wide ATM network for efficiently linking its gateways to international ATM superhighways and to provide multi-media services. Sikdar further announced that he has written a letter to the prime minister A B Vajpayee and will shortly introduce a proposal in the parliament for providing each and every school and college in the country with Internet connection, in order to provide economically backward students, the facility to avail tuition through distance learning. "We propose to introduce this facility through individual MP fund, encompassing the constituency of each MP. It will cost Rs 2 lakh per connection so that in the next five years this will be available to majority of educational institutions within the country", said Sikdar. Sikdar also said that the ministry had resolved to increase the rural tele-density tenfold from 0.4 to 4 by the year 2010. "We are determined to provide Internet access to all district headquarters at the earliest and gradually to all blocks and villages", pointed out the minister. The VSNL CMD S K Gupta pointed out that the company had invested Rs 300 crore in the eastern region, including Rs 57 crore which was spent to the futuristic building on the Videsh Sanchar Bhavan. The new building is 62.95 metres tall with 40-metre roof-top tower. The main building will provide modern facilities and amenities for the technical and operational staff.
