I know someone who referred to him, ...as "that lame-assed Turkish guy." I've felt, since then, that I can't quite respect her.

Yes- like something important is missing from her emotional make-up. OK- this is dumb, but I worry that he is going to get hurt. He seems vulnerable. ANYone would be vulnerable in that position, I think, but he is so OUT THERE. ANd what if he believes what's happening is real?

People are odd in the things that appeal to them en masse. DO you remember that TERRIBLE singer Tiny TIm, and his wedding to Miss Vicky on the Carson Show? It was so embarrassing. I don't want Mahir to be embarrassed in that way.

Oops, sorry to be repetitious. Should have browsed down the thread.

I think the affection for him is because he is genuine and unpretentious. We Americans tend to put on airs and show a false face to the world. Mahir seems totally honest and innocent.

Mahir is someone you could imagine would fit in a Saturday Night Live skit. Or maybe a cousin for Andy Kaufmann's "Foreign Man". It's why I find him amusing.
