IP Telephony's Delay

The business mainstream is hesitant to shift analog voice traffic to IP
networks, despite promised efficiency

By James C. Luh

If you want to convince the uninitiated how the Internet can make business
more efficient, shifting analog voice traffic to IP networks is an ideal
example-in principle. Voice over IP, or VoIP, can promise astronomical cost
savings in a way that's easy for non-technical types to understand: Take your
calls off that expensive phone line, and slap them on top of the free Internet.
Same service, more bang for the buck.

The reality, though, is a bit less grandiose. Analysts say that while the VoIP
market is growing, the business mainstream is hesitant to move in.
