Holier than COW

(FRIDAY FUNDAS this week honours our bovine friends and their importance in Hindu society. Take heed when INDIA TODAY Art Editor Ravi Shankar talks about none being Holier than COW.)

-Ravi Shankar

I like cows. My grandfather, besides once being the best sharpshooter in the British army in South India in early 1900, also kept a dairy farm. My grandmother, a beautiful long-haired woman with an aristocratic nose, would insist on getting up at the crack of dawn to milk her favourite cow, a black spotted one with wicked horns on which she had hung a couple of bells for the sake of bovine coquetry, which would tinkle in the night from the barn, get carried across the night in the Malabar wind into my childhood sleep and flavour my dreams of lollipops or pretty girls in pigtails....
