Bob,SBC/Ameritech however, is betting on ADSL(ALA),3dSL(NN) based on
ATM architecture in Pronto project.
In Europe were cable TV covers only 25% of customers and building fiber line will be somewhat limited to be rather major highway only(high cost of putting fiber in very populated urban areas where copper is running already underground) 3dSL is the best solution.
BT plc for example is doing the same what SBC is doing with Pronto project.

Bob, when I have listened to Pronto announcement CC,the idea was to provide fiber to the major distribution area, districts and the used existing copper solutions in the "last mile" or "last few miles".
Providing fiber ot every home or small business would results in much higher cost to consumer.
They can not offer more expensive solution to TV cable, which right now can not for example provide what ADSL in general can,eg.high quality voice.
Also I would not be surprise that Bell South wil use combination of fiber and copper in they project.
They talkabout ADLS + fiber in press release:
"The Marconi equipment will allow the delivery of high-speed broadband services to within 500 feet of the customer. Bringing high-powered
fiber optic networks closer to customers can speed transmission times and reduce bottlenecks."
