Hi Neo,

My son was picked on mercilessly in 6th grade by several larger boys. We had talked to the administration (this was a private school)and they had done nothing. Finally one day one hit him in the face and he turned around and slugged back, was disciplined severely, stripped of his student office, and suspended-- all before I was even called. WHen I got there, hours later at the end of the day, Cw was in shock, with a bruise on his face, wandering the halls. The Asst headmaster had been out of control, screaming and hollering with the door open, while other students stood outside and listened. CW asked him if he could please take a time out, that he was too upset to talk, and he refused to let him. Most of the details didn't come out for several months, while CW began to have nightwalking incidents, insomnia, and nightmares.

Dan was on the board of trustees and I was on the Parents' COuncil; it was a very awkward situation. The headmistress had earlier told CW (in front of us) that he might have to defend himself at some point. And damned if she didn't sit with us and the Asst after the incident and say, well, yes, but we have to make an example of him now. Hitting is never right. We felt so hurt and betrayed by their total unwillingness to work WITH us. We finally pulled CW out and I homeschooled him while we looked for a place out here.
It was the best thing we ever did.
(Oddly 1/2 of his class also eventually left that year for similar reasons, but at the time, I have never felt so lonely and scared. It was very hard for me to buck the authorities. Another reason I am so glad CW is independent and assertive.
