Yes, I think that is an issue. But if I understand it correctly, it is a facility-based issue. Facility based-issues rarely win out over user-based issues because the cost of leaving it up to the end user is usually far less.

Second, your comparison with what happens at Yahoo! isn't entirely valid in my mind because Yahoo! content doesn't change as much as the content on 500 television channels. Ultimately, the end user will want to see what's going on with the 498 channels they don't use on a regular basis.

Also, don't forget that the cable companies are going to give us just enough flexibility to make the experience appealing but not so much that they cut themselves out of the revenue streams.

Having said all that, the degree of success of Gemstar's model is certainly subject to question. Not all gorillas have the same success mostly because all industries aren't the same.
