I suspect that part of the criticism of schools "loss of control" is a visceral, knee-jerk reaction to the fact that corporal punishment by school teachers and administrators has been banned in most states. It's a fairly recent trend, and there's a lot of resentment among, well, you can imagine.

Chris, the kids, and I went to a few museums today, to the Sackler to see an exhibit on the Royal Tombs from Ur, then to the National Gallery to see the Vermeer that couldn't travel for the big Vermeer show a couple of years ago, and ended up at the American History Museum. I was standing in the lobby, waiting for the rest to catch up with me, and noticed a couple of homely looking chairs in a glass case. It was the chairs used in "Archie Bunker," the ones that Archie and Edith sat in while they watched TV. All of a sudden I flashed on how much Feelies reminds me of the "Archie Bunker Show" these days. LOL!
