Yes, there were much more serious things to attend to. Making war on the Infidel without cessation left little time to worry about silly witches. Every time a woman was brought before the Inquisition (a panel of learned men) as a witch, she was found to be either daft or a mistake had been made. They never burned a witch.

As for your definition/knowledge note, I agree that we don't know as much about ourselves as we think we do.
