Ireland lost people because of the potato famine- caused by a disease in the potato crop. I don't think Ireland's loss of population had much to do with the Church- possibly with conflicts between the Catholic and Protestant- but I don't see that primarily as religious, but more as a divide between the Ascendancy and the Irish Catholic population over power and sovereignty.
