John,

Re:"My post was about the consumer/end user marketplace. The current REALITY is that Intel/Pentium has probably about a 100 to 1 brand name recognition over AMD/Athlon. As recent surveys have demonstrated, Intel is one of the most respected brand names in the US, my guess would be that that distinction is probably worldwide. Can AMD overcome that PERCEPTION with a few press releases, no, good marketing has long term staying power.

Is Intel challenged by the PERCEPTION that AMD has a lead in CPU speed? A great company, a leader, is not going to allow a deceptive marketing strategy to dilute their brand. They are going to respond. That is what I think Intel is doing, and as a stockholder I believe they are doing the right thing. "

I believe that you are shortchanging what AMD has accomplished.

They have an excellent design in the ATHLON - this is a REALITY.

They are having excellent speed yields in the 0.18 MICRON - THE ONLY PART THEY ARE SHIPPING IS 750MHZ - what does this tell you - AMD's design/process at 0.18 at least matches if not easily exceeds Intels.

And ATHLON 700 and 750's are available ALL OVER THE PLACE - Compaq, IBM, Cybermax, Fujitsu/siemans to a whole bunch of tier II stores in US and worldwide.

So, saying that all this is simply due to a "deceptive marketing strategy" is clearly WRONG.

The best case for AMDs success is INTELs fumbling and bumbling in getting Coppermines out at good speeds, yields and volumes.

If you are really this out of touch with REALITY then perhaps you should do some better research and get in touch again.

regards,

Kash
