The thing about Tiny Tim, and Mrs. Miller (remember her?) was that they didn't seem at all embarrassed by themselves, even though one would have thought they should be. Like they really, really thought that people were adulating them because they were actually good.

But I feel that way a lot. Wayne Newton. Ann-Margret. Nancy Sinatra singing "These Boots Are Made For Walking." But people really like them, it seems. I couldn't listen to Liberace, either. In fact, I far prefer Tiny Tim to Wayne Newton or Liberace.

Oh, I don't think Tiny Tim was embarrassed at all!!! I was just embarrassed for him. And Mrs. Miller!! I forgot about her til Cobe mentioned her. I think CHarley was right about Americans being charmed by MAhir's openness, his seeming lack of guile, becuase we are so cautious with our feelings. And doesn't that make you feel protective? Who are these promoters shoving their product name in front of him as he appears. They just better treat him right, doggone it.

I frequently spend energy being embarrassed for people who often aren't at all embarrassed about themselves. One year at a voice recital, there was a girl who did a rendition of Sunrise, Sunset. It was stunningly bad--totally offkey, out of sync with the accompanist. I happened to glance over at Dan who had come to hear me, and he was staring down at the floor, eyes closed. Afterwards he showed me the inside of his cheeks-- he had chewed them up trying not to laugh. We all did, we pinched ourselves, and bit our lips, and I even broke into a cold sweat on her behalf. She was happily oblivious to all the agony surrounding her, though.
