Richard, a suggestion - next time see if they have Reserva Especial for a little more, it's quite a lot better and is put out by the same outfit under the Don Pedro label. Maybe twenty per cent more, but worth the difference, more taste and smoother. I am rarely far from at least a little 200 ml bottle in Mexico.

I was just surprised to see that AD owns Laphroaig as well, that's my favourite malt - allieddomecqplc.com ... two bottles of Ballantines every second of every day - hoo ha, there's gold in them thar stills.

Richard : I don't know that brandy. Is it Spanish or Mexican?

Apropos good value lurking "just below the surface", surely that's the case with most things. As I understand it, most people are so brainwashed that all they know are "brand" names. Especially as far as booze is concerned. One evening some years ago, I had occasion to invite some very "smart" French people for dinner. Just as an exercise, I poured a bottle of local cheap, cooking brandy into an empty bottle of French Napoleon cognac and served it after dinner. I can tell you my guests believed they were drinking the real McCoy! You should have seen them sniffing their glasses and nodding.......Such bullshit!

At the moment, in SAf with our crap currency, a bottle of J&B Scotch costs $10 US. Hardly money. Of course, if you want to pay, you can.
