With a returned affection, the issue is corporal punishment of children and the statistics behind the abstracts that purport to demonstrate linkages between corporal punishment of any kind and emotional problems in adulthood. There are statistical problems with some of the studies, problems that led me to post that no one should take the abstracts of the studies without looking behind the abstracts at the methodology.

No matter how much a study may accord with one's own beliefs, to neglect to subject it to scrutiny is intellectual sloppiness, IMO.

Re your second question: The "rift" is something that requires a global explanation. As it affects me, I have been relegated--weirdly, IMO--to being one of the "guys" merely because I maintain civil relations with some of the more difficult persons on this thread.
