This link has been posted, but this excerpt hasn't been emphasized:cardtech.faulknergray.com "Mondex and Multos going their separate ways? "Changes could be coming in the ownership of the Mondex electronic purse system for smart cards and the related operating system known as Multos. Executives of the MAOSCO consortium that control Multos would like to separate Multos from Mondex because MasterCard International's 51% ownership of Mondex is a barrier to Visa banks licensing Multos, Belgium-based consultant Philip Andreae tells Card Technology. The Financial Times of London reported last week that Mondex may sell further shares in an attempt to raise $48 million in new capital and that Multos could be sold off, possibly to Redmond, Wash.-based Microsoft Corp. or Palo Alto, Calif.-based Sun Microsystems Inc. Mondex, MAOSCO and Microsoft officials did not comment. Patrice Peyret, director of Sun's consumer and embedded division, says Sun executives have had discussions about the newspaper report, but said there are no high-level discussions underway between Sun and MAOSCO. MasterCard bought a 51% stake in Mondex in 1996, reportedly for $156 million, a figure MasterCard has not confirmed. Mondex developed the Multos multiapplication smart card operating system, and MasterCard has one vote on the MAOSCO board that controls Multos technology, along with American Express Co. and various international card issuers and technology companies.
