Did you read that link I posted? It said that though the potato crop failed other crops and beef did really well- but the food was shipped to the continent for sale- rather than being used to feed the Irish.

Also, the English did not want to let American ships with food relief sale directly to Ireland. They wanted the ships to sale to England, off load to English ships, and let the English ships sale to Ireland. Gives you some idea of how horrible the relationship can get between the Irish and the English.
