Within a year, the Assistant was gone. The head retired the next year. Both had been in education for far too long and were absolutely entrenched in their own theories; they hated the modern parent, who is so much more "aggressive and demanding" than my parents' generation. Their response was to be condescending and smug. And to demean our children-- as a way of putting us in our place, I suppose. Power, power, power. I like to think we hastened their departure in our reports to the Board. I see the pressure to mediocrity as our worst enemy in raising and educating children.
