What is the buying power required for me to be able to sell puts on 1000 shares of the Q which I already own, but were purchased on margin? that depends on when you purchased those 1000 shares of QCOM. If you bought them a year ago at around $ 20/sh, you do have a sizable margin coverage for selling puts. However, if you just recently bought those shares, you probably do not have any room. Your broker's margin department should be able to tell you. Give them a call. Good Luck Paul
