The AB was on the brink of bankruptcy only two years ago. Since then they have made a financial come back, but my sense is that they are trying to control production costs so as to avoid finding themselves in that situation again.

I think they'll be able to give the musicians a raise once their coffers are more full. And they'll want/need to--the subs were inferior to the union players that usually populate the pit.

You're correct (thanks for pointing it out), once I paid for the tickets, the AB had the money, and I couldn't have gotten a refund, even if I had asked for one (Ticketmaster policy).
