That's probably a large part of it. Each competitor is trying to leapfrog each other in raw clock speeds. Like I said before, Intel used to have the luxury of waiting until sufficient volume builds in the channel before announcing. That luxury is gone for the time-being, so more and more we'll be seeing a lot of these "phantom launches" by the respective marketing departments.

Oh well, as long as Intel has the luxury of lower costs and higher volumes, they have a very good foundation to work with, so little execution stumbles will just be egg on the face. However, I'm not sure how people will react if AMD had one more execution stumble. One thing's for sure, they have indeed been executing well for the past few months, and that has Intel rallying like crazy. But that doesn't mean they're free from such errors in the near future. (And no, I don't believe AMD is sandbagging, or else they wouldn't be letting Intel take the MHz crown for even a few weeks.)
