New Linux Solution Embeds McAfee Virus Protection in High-Performance Servers

Network Associates' Award-winning McAfee VirusScan Engine Protects Linux-based E-business Applications, Internet Appliances and Managed Service Offerings

from Virus and Malicious Code Outbreaks

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Dec. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Network Associates, Inc. (Nasdaq: NETA) today announced the industry's first solution to enable third party developers and service providers to easily embed the market-leading McAfee VirusScan engine into Linux-based e-business applications, Internet appliances, and managed service offerings. The new McAfee Virus Interface for Protective Early Response (VIPER) for Linux is a software development toolkit that creates high-performance anti-virus solutions for demanding e-business applications, such as scanning Internet e-mail traffic, and Web server downloads for malicious code. In the first half of 1999 alone, virus outbreaks caused e-businesses and end-users more than $7.6 billion in damage according to a recent report by research firm Computer Economics.

With the introduction of the McAfee VIPER for Linux toolkit, Network Associates continues its product leadership in making anti-virus protection part of the Internet infrastructure. Network Associates is the first and only anti-virus provider to allow Linux solution providers, and third-party and corporate developers to increase the security of their e-business offerings by embedding the industry's leading virus protection directly into their applications, appliances and managed service offerings.

As the Linux operating system gains significant market share as an Internet gateway, Web, mail and file server platform, the performance and security of applications running on these mission critical servers is of paramount importance. Key benefits of the McAfee VIPER for Linux toolkit include:

-- Ability to write directly to scanning engine for enhanced performance

and protection of high Internet traffic environments

-- Support for HTTP, SMTP, and FTP protocol scanning

-- On the fly file decompression, macro virus support and heuristic

analysis

-- Automatic updates for maintenance-free protection

-- Industry leading virus detection and cleaning

-- Scanning of boot sectors, partition sector and files

-- Support from McAfee AVERT (Anti-Virus Emergency Response Team), the

world's leading anti-virus research group

"Network Associates is working very closely with customers, developers and service providers to enhance the McAfee Total Virus Defense product line to meet the anti-virus security needs for the next millennium," said Sal Viveros, group manager for McAfee Total Virus Defense at Network Associates. "As more companies rely on the Internet to drive their e-business, the demand for Linux-based solutions has increased. By delivering the McAfee VIPER for Linux toolkit, we enable third parties to embed the best anti-virus security technology into their e-business offerings to provide customers with maximum protection at the Internet gateway."

The introduction of the McAfee VIPER for Linux toolkit continues Network Associates leadership on the Linux platform. Network Associates was the first major software vendor -- in any application area - to support the Linux operating system with its shipment of WebShield for Linux in 1996. Today, the McAfee VirusScan family of products supports the greatest number of platforms in the industry, including Linux, Windows 3.x, Windows 9x, Windows NT, Windows 2000, Novell Netware, Sun Solaris, HP-UX, IBM AIX, SCO OpenServer and the Mac OS.

"Covalent is excited about the benefits of embedding the McAfee VirusScan engine into our e-commerce software suite," said Randy Terbush, CEO and CTO of Covalent Technologies, Inc., the leading provider of Apache-based commerce solutions. "Solutions like the McAfee VIPER for Linux toolkit allow us to increase the security of our Apache offerings."

The McAfee VIPER for Linux toolkit is a key component of Network Associates' award-winning McAfee Total Virus Defense (TVD) solution. The McAfee TVD suite provides complete anti-virus protection at the desktop, file server, groupware server and Internet gateway. Powerful integrated management tools make it easy for administrators to deploy updates and upgrades, and to configure and monitor virus security enterprise-wide. The McAfee TVD product line is sold as a standalone suite and as part of the Net Tools Secure suite, Network Associates' comprehensive security suite incorporating anti-virus, firewall, encryption, authentication, intrusion detection, vulnerability assessment, and security management.
