<Christine, you have argued we should pass a law banning the spanking of children.
Since every law needs enforcement mechanisms in place to ensure compliance. Let
me ask you, what punishment do you think should be handed out to a parent who
spanks their child?>

I believe that in Sweden, theoretically a parent can go to jail for spanking their children. It would be interesting to see how the law is actually enforced there. I think it would be more appropriate to start with parenting education classes, very similar to the court-ordered classes that attempt to teach anger management to wife and child beaters, etc. These would be focused on alternative ways of disciplining children that are effective. I guess that if the law were changed it should start with a public health campaign, like the ones against smoking and drugs. With pamphlets available if you call an 800 number, etc. The percentage of parents who spank their children in America drops slightly every year, so such a campaign would simply encourage a trend that is already occurring.

<And to take it one step further, what punishment should be handed out to those
parents who refuse to abide by the law and repeatedly spank their kids?>

The same one that is taken with people who beat their spouses--counseling and eventually jail time. It wasn't that long ago that spousal abuse was a "family matter" the way you are perceiving that spanking is today. Eventually the tide turned, and the law starting being enforced much more consistently. No one has answered my question yet about why you can no longer hit your wife, but spanking your kid is seen as your right. That just is not logical to me at all.
