Swizz Nat Bank freezes gold lending at Sept levels
Zurich ? Swiss National Bank Deputy Chairman Jean-Pierre Roth confirmed on Friday that the SNB had frozen gold lending at levels seen when 15 European central banks agreed in September to limit gold operations.
"Clearly we had to stop further increasing gold lending because one part of the agreement was that central banks do not expand their gold lending operations. So we have stopped expanding our gold lending operations," he told Reuters after the SNB's year-end news conference.
He was not more specific. He also declined to discuss the method by which the SNB was likely to sell 1 300 tonnes of excess gold reserves no longer needed for monetary policy.
Roth reiterated he hoped legislation authorising the gold sales would win final parliamentary approval by the end of this year. It would then have to be officially published and face a three-month period in which any opponents could try to force a referendum under Switzerland's system of direct democracy.(cont)
