Actually I was talking more about the responsibility of the individual toward society than the other way around. Society is US- and when we join it we change it. And when we live in it we belong to it. And our children leave us (and as you say - we as parents bear the responsibility for raising them to go out into the world) and go out into society and live the rest of their lives in the wider society of others- SO from my perspective they are going to spend more time and a greater percentage of their lives living in the society of others than they are in the society of their parents- and by that token they "belong" more to society than to their parents- I am using belonging as a synonym for "being a part of and living within".
