That is a great tradition. Unfortunately, I am not a Sci-fi buff, but I am sure that Michael Cummings can help, if he is still around......

Penni, if you go to Amazon.com to the teen section, it has everything broken down by category, including sci fi. When you click on it, you will be able to read synopses of each book that is really popular right now, along with reviews from the press, and then at the bottom, from others who have read the book:

amazon.com

What about The Deadliest Game, one of the Net Force books for teens by Tom Clancy? It looked interesting for boys.

Your son might have grown out of teenage books. My daughter reads at an adult level, technically, but it was very difficult to find books for her that were not terribly adult in subject matter. We bought one Oprah book club book by Wally Lamb that seemed interesting from the cursory look in the bookstore, but the girl in the book ended up being raped. My daughter was really shaken up by it, and has asked for books that are not depressing. In looking through the current titles for teenagers, though, it seems like almost all of them are about very dreary things like drunken fathers and teenage pregnancy and gangs and long stays in mental institutions. I do not remember books like this when I was a teenager.

Even if I end up actually shopping at the bookstore, I think you can find a lot more good ideas at Amazon.com. The reviews really help weed things out, at least for me.
