JDN, if you absolutely can't wait until spring, just get yourself an el-cheapo Celeron 500 MHz system. That thing, for all practical purposes, can be considered the performance equivalent of a Pentium III 450 MHz, all other components being equal. Or just go for the real thing, a Pentium III 500 MHz.

Once Willamette comes out next year (Q4 2000 at the latest), that Celeron system will be much much easier to let go than some Pentium III Rambus system that you will have bought in mid-2000. And trust me, Willamette represents a huge leap over both Pentium III and Athlon.

Or you can just say "The heck with it" and stick to sub-$1200 systems for the rest of your life. Maybe by the end of 2002, even Willamette will end up in that price range.
