MUMBAI 20 DECEMBER

TECHPACK International of France, which provides packaging solutions to leading international brands in the cosmetic industry, is setting up a manufacturing base in India.

The $350-m company is part of the $20-bn Pechiney group of France (a market leader in plastic packaging and aluminium industry). Techpack International, with its expertise in plastic packaging, caters to renowned international brands like L'Oreal, Estee Lauder, Christian Doir, Clinique Sanofi, Shiseido, Guerlain, Nina Ricci, Cartier, Yves Rocher, Unilever and Procter & Gamble, to name a few.

Jean-Luc Allavene, director general, Techpack International, in an exclusive interview to ET said, "The cosmetics industry is becoming a global industry. We want to invest in India as most of our clients now have a significant presence in India and we, as suppliers, want to be associated with them and meet their requirements as we do in other countries. For the last two years, we have been meeting the demand through imports which is not a sustainable option."

"India is a large market with many global players. The Indian cosmetic packaging industry with a turnover of $50m is expected to grow at a rate of over 30 to 35 per cent in the coming years and we plan to be the undisputed leaders with a marketshare of over 25 per cent," he said.

The company has grown through acquisitions globally over the last 25 years across the markets in Europe, USA, Latin America and Asia. In India, Teckpack International will commence operations in joint venture with a local partner over the next two months.

"Our plant will be near Mumbai as we believe in being close to our markets and our clients," said Mr Allavena adding, "We will formally announce our partner only after only after we sign an agreement."

Packaging fragrances, is one of the key areas of Techpack International. The company provides plastic bottles or caps. It has been a major player in a large number of important fragrance launches initiated by top designers and multinational companies like Cartier and Issey Miyake. The company also provides skin-care packaging products which are provide sophisticated formulations like anti-ageing, anti-wrinkling and anti-pollution formulations which demand airless dispensers.

"We provide packaging solutions with thick walls, crystal clarity and Lalique effects which in no way detracts aesthetic considerations," said Mr Allavena.
Besides, Techpack provides packaging make-up kits which make up more than 50 per cent of the company's sales includes products like mascara, lipstick, compact, nail varnish.

Said Mr Alavena, "In the coming millennium, the industry will get more demanding and we will have to simplify things for our customers by providing complete packaging solutions at competitive prices."
