Terrific is an understatement:-)

Taiwan DRAM Makers Expect Harvest in 2000
December 20, 1999 (TAIPEI) -- Dynamic random access memory (DRAM) companies have increased purchases from contract manufacturers, many of which are in Taiwan.

Because local manufacturers have received handsome orders for next year, and bacause prices are sliding in a limited way, DRAM makers in Taiwan are expected to enjoy a booming business at the turn of the year.

Most of the world's DRAM makers have formed strategic alliance with Taiwan manufacturers, under which the latter focus on research and development and release most of the manufacturing to the region.

Toshiba Corp. is a partner of Winbond Electronics Corp. and Asian Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp.; Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. is in strategic alliance with Macronix International Co., Ltd. and Asian Semiconductor; Powerchip Semiconductor Corp. and Vanguard International Semiconductor Corp. are making DRAMs for Mitsubishi Electric Corp.; IBM Corp. has teamed up with Nan Ya Technology Corp.; and Promos Technologies Inc. is in partnership with Infineon Technologies AG.

Local DRAM makers point out that these foreign companies have imposed pressure on other leaders in the industry, since they, with high research and development ability, benefit from Taiwan's manufacturing technology. Such strategic alliances also yield steady sales to local makers, they added.

Market observers forecast that DRAM prices are unlikely to drop next year as foreign companies in such strategic alliances are demanding more lately. The 64M DRAM's contract price is expected to stand at NT$7 per unit, if not higher. (NT$31.65 = US$1)

NORTH AMERICAN SEMICONDUCTOR EQUIPMENT INDUSTRY POSTS NOVEMBER 1999 BOOK-TO-BILL RATIO OF 1.10

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., December 20, 1999 -- The North American-based manufacturers of semiconductor equipment posted record orders in November 1999 and a Book-to-Bill ratio of 1.10, it was reported by Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (SEMI). A book-to-bill of 1.10 means $110 in orders were received for each $100 worth of products shipped.

The three-month average of worldwide shipments in November 1999 was $1.55 billion. The figure is four percent above the October 1999 level, and is 69 percent above the November 1998 shipments level of $913 million. The three-month average of bookings in November 1999 was $1.70 billion. The bookings figure is six percent above October 1999 and 122 percent above the $767 million posted in November 1998.

The bookings figure is the highest recorded to date, four percent above the previous cycle high of $1.63 billion in November 1997 and just above the previous record high of $1.69 billion posted in February 1996.

"Semiconductor manufacturing equipment bookings posted an all-time monthly high in November," said Stanley T. Myers, president of SEMI. "The growth pattern in semiconductor sales and the increasing adoption of new technologies has helped drive continued strength in the equipment market."

The SEMI book-to-bill is a ratio of three-month moving average bookings to three-month moving average shipments for the North American semiconductor equipment industry. Shipments and bookings figures are in millions of U.S. dollars.
