Orbcomm is a similar satellite network, and there are others coming, ellipso comes to mind (my favorite, based on its elliptical orbit). Unfortunately, we all know what happened to Iridium, though it is voice rather than data-oriented, and was/is costly and premature.

right- just toss up a few birds from your backyard - c'mon, first to market does have some value - a start-up now would have to raise billions and spend 4 years on the hardware -

What's to prevent some other company from setting up a similar satellite network?
I would think the shuttle delays, the several rockets that have blown up, and the bancrupcy of Iridium would make most companies think twice (or more) about putting up a lot of satellites, and reaching the market late. I don't own Globalstar nor do I proclaim it gorilla, but I do think that barriers to entry do not all have to be patents and legal documents.
