China win for Divi:
DiviCom Wins Head-End Deployment for First Digital MMDS Television System in China
SZBTC Selects Leading Digital Video Open Solutions Provider for Superior Video Quality, Bandwidth Efficiency and Flexibility
MILPITAS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 21, 1999-- DiviCom©, a C-Cube Microsystems (Nasdaq: CUBE - news) subsidiary and the world's leading provider of open solutions for digital television, today announced its deployment of solutions for China's first digital multi-channel/multi-point distribution system (MMDS) head-end at the Shenzhen Broadcast Transmission Center (SZBTC).

The wireless cable provider deployed DiviCom's open solutions-based MPEG-2 encoding system to convert quickly from analog to digital for delivering services in and around Shenzen. The system, deployed in the fastest-growing economic zone in China under Beijing's policy for economic reform, will also allow SZBTC to use two more of its analog channels for datacasting and interactive Internet Service Protocol (ISP) services.

DiviCom partnered with conditional access system and set-top box vendors to supply its MediaView(TM) MPEG-2 encoders and complete system integration services to increase SZBTC's channel count from four to 23 channels of digital MMDS service.

``We selected DiviCom for its superb video and audio quality, superior system-integration experience and support, and most of all for its flexible solution, which will enable us to plan for future expansion while preserving our current investment,' said Mr. Fu Feng Chun, SZBTC's Chief Engineer and Deputy Director.

``Since we wanted to offer new levels of service to our subscribers, expand the number of channels, and be prepared for increased competition as our economy continues to grow, we ranked interoperability and flexibility as key features, particularly since we needed to meet international broadcast standards,' Mr. Fu said. ``DiviCom's open systems-based solution allows us to choose the best upgrades and new features. In addition, with the system's expandability, we can now move into new markets whenever and wherever they evolve.'

``SZBTC is committed to leading in the delivery of digital television service,' said Tom Lookabaugh, President of DiviCom. ``DiviCom open solutions are designed to provide the capability needed for today with the ability to adapt to rapidly changing market requirements.'

SZBTC's system includes the following DiviCom solutions:

-- The DiviCom MediaView(TM) MV12 Encoder: SZBTC deployed MediaView
MV12 standard definition encoders, which offer superior video
compression efficiency in a cost-effective package.
-- The THESYS(TM) Integrated Network Management Solution: This
modular suite of user-friendly software packages provides
integrated, advanced element and network management.
-- The MediaNode(TM) MN20 Multiplexer: The core of the digital cable
head-end system, the MN20 not only combines and grooms broadcast
audio, video, and associated data programming, but supports DVB
and DES scrambling.
