I have a Dell XPS 200. I will check my books in the morning but both hard drives are listed under primary in the bios setup. O and 1 . The secondary is the Cd Rom.

Are you changing the jumpers for slave and master?
Yes, but not with the machine on.<G> However, with the alt key I won't need to do that unless I find out that is also a problem.

How's the cats ?

I have a hard drive with NT 4 on it that
will not boot on IDE primary master when
used with a new MB (went from Matsonic 5205
to FIC 503+). It will boot from the IDE
secondary master.

What might be the cause and a fix?

I wonder if you might have any idea as to what is causing my computer to act in a maddeningly quirky way. What is happening is that sometimes, when I am online, and I click on a link or a button, say to place a trade, my computer does not respond--the modem icon does not blink, and anywhere from five seconds to a minute pass and then the icon starts flashing and the connection is made. This happens sporadically but frequently throughout the day--at least several times an hour--sometimes as much as not. Unfortunately I am using a browser based broker right now and this adds a bit to the stress.

The background to this that I have just built a new computer and networked it to the old computer. I have only file and printer sharing right now. The modem, a US Robotics 56K is in the old box and is not shared. (After the first of the year I will have ADSL in the new box and then will share that, probably with SyGate.) It was within the last week that I installed the NICs and connected the machines. After that the trouble started.

The network components are:

Client for Microsoft Networks
Dial-up Adapter
Linksys LNE100TX Fast Ethernet Adapter
TCP/IP->Dial-up Adapter
TCP/IP-> Linksys LNE100TX Fast Ethernet Adapter
File and printer sharing for Microsoft Networks

This is identical on both machines although Win98 did install Microsoft Family Logon on the new machine in addition to Client for MS Networks.I removed Family Logon last night but it didn't make any different.

Win98SE on both machines.

I am just assuming this is related to the networking.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Bob
