In The Railyard

Twenty-five years ago
in the summertime, a man
puts down his acetylene torch
lifts his dark heavy mask to eat

an apricot.

Heedlessly
thrown, the pit
lands between a lamp
post and a propane tank

on oily earth.

Summer sun
dries, winter snow
blankets as the stoic pit
waits for spring melt to put forth

a pink shoot, a white root.

A sapling
takes hold, prospers:
green leaves, delicate blossoms
sweet orange fruit in the railyard, discarded pit

returning thousandfold.
