Thanks X. I note that nobody was bothered when President Bush said that he didn't think that Atheists could be good Americans. We are still the only group that can be bashed with impunity. If the true story of the holidays offends people, so be it.

X, if you think it is obvious that I have "no respect" for Del's world view, you are something less than the intellectual giant you often portray yourself to be.

My post has NOTHING to do with Del's world view and I don't care what it is. I have no objection to Del, or anyone else, being an atheist, or noting the coincidence of the winter solstice with Christmas. And, I have no argument with it being noted that observance of the winter solstice was co-opted by Christmas on the Christian calendar.

I do find it needlessly insulting and rude for Del to volunteer his view of God being a fraud. And, yes, I personally find it a special affront at this time of year. If you had a child who died of an OD, would you feel especially pissed to see someone dealing at his funeral?

But, it has nothing to do, really, with personal beliefs, knowledge or appropriate times -- it has everything to do with respect for the sensibilities of others and plain good manners.

There has been much talk of Christmas on the thread. I recall no one going on a religious rant. My own participation has been limited to recommending a Christmas CD.

In earlier discussions on religion, I have stated my belief in the power of faith and my own completely uncertain understanding of theological particulars. I have not written one word saying that anyone else's view is wrong.

IMO, Del's comment was as provocative as if I had swooped in and announced that atheists were idiots. Is some purpose intended by such acts? What is it? Would Del scream bloody murder if the "religious right" started in on him?

Perhaps Del (who hasn't dropped by in ages) thought some of us needed a reality check. Del certainly doesn't need to PRETEND to be something other than an atheist. But, just as he would expect of me, he can skip the "preaching".

The thread is yours. I'm going to bed.
