I beg to disagree, cha2. It was given due consideration, rehashed several times, and then dismissed. I respect your passion for snowballs, which is why I don't call them shiny pebbles any more. It would be nice if you could show a similar degree of respect for the focus of the thread and its analytical process, even if it means some of your favorites don't make the cut. Saying we dismissed Globalstar "out of hand" trivializes our efforts.

For those interested in Global Star I can offer the following: I had lunch a couple of weeks ago with a VP of Alcatel. As I understood him they had several connections into the venture but mostly on integrating some part of the satellite. This was a couple of days before they made some announcement in Paris about Boeing(I think) joining the effort. He said that they had 120 telecom or comparable entities contracted to promote the service.

When I asked why they would be more successful than Iridium he gave a long explanation, but the short version is that they get better ground coverage, data transmission and cheaper. He was using quite a bit of Telco vernacular (which is greek to me)so I may have this next part confused. I understood that the down link is (or can be) received by a ground station and then rebroadcast which may help to receive signals. I think he may have even meant that it could be sent over a standard cell phone system, but we had enjoyed an ample quantity of Haut Brion so this can be a scrambled recollection.

Suffice it to say that he (that means Alcatel also) is very positive on the venture.
