Gingrich at odds again with Clinton
By Toby Harnden in Washington
NEWT GINGRICH, former Speaker of the House of Representatives and a Republican firebrand, returned to the political fray yesterday with an outspoken attack on President Clinton.
Breaking his silence after he stepped down following the Republican party's poor performance in the 1998 mid-term elections, Mr Gingrich accused Mr Clinton of changing US policy to help his wife Hillary's campaign for election to the New York Senate seat. He told the Washington Times: "Never before has the presidency been held hostage to the needs of a Senate race in one state.

"This is an administration that will release [Puerto Rican] terrorists to help the president's wife, that will close down the Navy's training facilities in Puerto Rico and exploit gays in the military to help the president's wife.

"And if she decides to go after the French vote I wouldn't be surprised if he decides to give back the Louisiana Purchase. He's always used policy that way. He's used it to get himself re-elected. Now he is using it to help his wife."(cont)
