RESEARCH ALERT - Lucent Q1 rev growth may be slim

NEW YORK, Dec 21 (Reuters) - JP Morgan Securities said on Tuesday it expects Lucent Technologies Inc.'s (NYSE:LU
- news) fiscal first-quarter revenue growth to meet its expectations, but the level of growth may be ``relatively unimpressive.'

-- said a year ago, Lucent had a $600 million to $800 million shortfall in revenues in the December quarter, due to problems
finalizing some contracts.

-- said it expects Lucent's fiscal first-quarter revenues to be $11.2 billion or 15 percent growth over the year-ago quarter.

-- said after adjusting for the shortfall a year ago, the $11.2 billion revenue estimate represents core revenue growth of 6 percent to 8 percent. Said that level of
growth is below the 23 percent revenue growth Lucent had the September quarter, and below the estimate of 18 percent to 20 percent growth in fiscal 2000.

-- said during Lucent's earnings conference call, Wall Street will focus on the company's guidance for revenue growth in the second fiscal quarter. The year-ago
March quarter included the revenue that was missed in the December quarter, so comparisons may be difficult.

-- said expects Lucent to offer guidance for 15 percent to 17 percent revenue growth in the March quarter. That would mean that Lucent would have to have
an increase in revenues in the second half of fiscal 2000 to achieve its full-year revenue growth goal of about 18 percent to 20 percent.

-- said uncertainty about Lucent's revenues causes it to be cautious at the moment. Recommends investors take an ``overweight' position in Cisco Systems and
Nortel Networks, compared to Lucent, until Lucent's revenue growth outlook becomes more clear.

-- said believes current level of weak revenue growth may be due to slowdown in growth for Lucent's Class-5 switching business.

-- said believes Lucent is well-positioned over the long-term to be industry leader. Said the fundamentals of its wireless, optical and data networking businesses
remain strong.

-- said expects Lucent to earn 55 cents a share in the fiscal first quarter. Said its 54 percent gross margin estimate may be somewhat aggressive due to the
amount of price discounting Lucent may be doing in the quarter. Said Lucent may have lower-than-expected selling, general and administrative spending.

-- shares of Lucent fell 3-1/4 to 80-1/16 on the New York Stock Exchange.
