So many points- hard to address them all. The best marks in school don't make someone an intellectual giant. An intellectual giant (imo) is someone like Shakespeare, or Russell, or Einstein - and to tell someone they THINK they are an intellectual giant is a snide cut (also, just my opinion). As for being part of an intellectual elite I'd like to know just WHERE THE HELL the rest of the elite is. I feel almost completely alone most of the time- a little rational island in a sea of emotionalism. It makes me feel very alone, but hardly elite. Some of us here have joked about being an elite- but we joke about it (possibly) because we aren't it. And although some humorless people in the past have taken us seriously we (or at least I) wasn't. I cannot imagine our views are in accord. Almost all your posts bother me. But I will allow for the possibility. Maybe it is your style of writing that fails to communicate our profound agreement. Suffice it to say I don't see it. And yes, I like to argue. Why else come here? I am here almost purely for "live" intellectual stimulation and I get annoyed when I don't find any. I read books for "dead" intellectual input- and that is very satisfactory in it's way- but every now and then I want something a little less inert. M As I perceive Del's "world view" it is to a certain extent evangelical- and so it is annoying. He feels called upon to share his view with the people least likely to respond. And he DOES need (for some reason) to confront the "gaggle of superstitious bumpkins who stole some primitive observance." THAT IS his point of view. You are telling him to refrain from expressing it. Which is going to have as much effect as trying to get rid of an evangelizing Christian. His world view is totally opposed to your "sacred meaning at this time of year". So rationally I conclude that you cannot possibly respect the person who utters the turd that ends up in in your punch bowl and who likes to "poke people in the eye". Maybe you have enormous respect for him- all I can tell you is- THAT DOES NOT COME ACROSS- and despite the credit you give me for a huge intellect I can't read minds. I don't actually perceive I toss around crap- I think of what I toss around as ideas. But that's just my perception.
