Mannesmann investor urges Vodafone talks
NEW YORK, Dec 22 (Reuters) - Guy Wyser-Pratte, a U.S. investor in the German telecommunications giant Mannesmann AG , on Wednesday said he would would seek a special shareholder meeting to pressure the company to negotiate with hostile bidder Vodafone AirTouch Plc. (quote from Yahoo! UK & Ireland: VOD.L) (NYSE:VOD - news).

Wyser-Pratte, a well-known arbitrageur, said his company Wyser-Pratte & Co. would immediately seek powers of attorney from Mannesmann shareholders to call the extraordinary meeting and seek a no-confidence vote in Mannesmann management if they refused to negotiate with Vodafone.

Mannesmann's board has been fighting Vodafone's bid, valued at $133 billion (131.6 billion euros)

Wyser-Pratte said he would introduce a withdrawal-of-confidence resolution at Mannesmann's regular 2000 shareholder meeting if the extraordinary meeting were not held in a timely fashion.

Holders of 5 percent of Mannesmann's share capital have the power to call an extraordinary shareholder meeting and introduce a withdrawal-of-confidence resolution, Wyser-Pratte said.

A spokesman for Wyser-Pratte & Co. declined to disclose the company's stake in Mannesmann, saying German regulations do not require it to do so.
