Gary,

A cabinet is NOT a card. 7R/E is a full packet switching cabinet with its own line and trunk carriers. It connects to an existing circuit-based 5ESS, but packet traffic originating from a line card on the 7R/E intended for a IP or ATM trunk on the 7R/E NEVER enters the 5ESS architecture. Eventually, as traffic bound for packet networks becomes predominant, all of the line cards (80% of the investment) from the original 5ESS can be transferred to 7R/E modules and the orignal 5ESS circuit fabric can be completely removed, leaving a true 100% packet based switch, operating with the full 5ESS telephony software suite.

Your arguement comparing this solution to puting an ATM SAR in a router is a strawman, intended to set a weak analog that can easily be destroyed. A better analog would be Cisco's GSR12016 which purports to turn the GSR into a terabit router via an off-board switching fabric. I do not think that you would claim that this solution is not really a terabit routing product, rather I expect you would praise Cisco for protecting its customers' investments in GSR hardware. In fact I would be more inclined to call the GSR12016 a "jury rigged" terabit router than to call the 7R/E a "jury rigged" packet switch. I urge you to learn more about LU's product architectures before you attack them.
