I think partly it is the versions they play- they don't play very GOOD versions of carols in the mall. Maybe they figure if it were too enjoyable you might sit on a bench and listen to the music, instead of hustling through the crowd to buy buy buy?

I think that X has hit the proverbial nail on the head. It's the problem of poor versions repeated incessantly and no variety, no resurging of old carols, no air time during Chanukah of the lovely songs associated with the holy time, nothing refreshing.
