Tony, <AMD has shot their wad on seventh generation, and it's Athol-on, which is more or less = Intel's sixth.>

In all fairness, Athlon does measure around 6.5 on Intel's scale of generations. The reason why Coppermine is so close to Athlon is because Intel's advantages (process tech, on-die cache, SSE/compiler support) allow them to push the venerable P6 core past the original limits. I'm sure if Intel had a 6.5-generation core of their own, they'd have a comfortable lead over AMD. But instead, Intel will go for the knock-out punch with a real 7th-generation core like Willamette.

<Sounds like Itanium and Timna shouldn't hurt the stock either.>

Timna should be very successful, based on the (rather surprising) success of the 810 platform. I just wonder about the profit margins of Timna.

Itanium should also hit the ground running as well, but even that is slated to be lower volume than Willamette because of the dynamics of the server/workstation markets.

RE: "Way to give it back to them. So let me get this straight: AMD has shot their wad on seventh generation, and it's Athol-on, which is more or less = Intel's sixth. So, what are they going to do about Intel's 7th gen., which sounds like a screamer vs. what either company has today. Willamette>>Coppermine, ergo, >>AMD anything. Sounds good. I'll keep on holding my Intel stock. Sounds like Itanium and Timna shouldn't hurt the stock either. "

Hi Ten & Tony,

That was an excellent interchange (Athalon ~ Intel's 6th) - thanks. Also, from the other post, very glad to hear ITanium is expected to come out well.
thanks,
Amy J

Tony - RE: "AMD has shot their wad on seventh generation, and it's Athol-on, which is more or less = Intel's sixth."

Just like Intel's P6 has evolved, you should also expect the AMD's K7 to evolve.

"So, what are they going to do about Intel's 7th gen., which sounds like a screamer vs. what either company has today."

Before we assume Willy will easily blow away any Athlon derivatives lets wait and see what Intel reveals about it at the IDF - developer.intel.com

Remember how some of us expected the Athlon to be completely superior to Cumine? Turns out the Cumine platform is neck and neck with the current Athlon platform (except in FPU intensive applications).
