REPEAT Press Release:

Linux Community Speaks Out: Inprise's JBuilder 3 Foundation Approaching 100,000 Downloads

Developers Choose Linux Version 2 to 1

SCOTTS VALLEY, Calif., Dec. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Inprise Corporation (Nasdaq: INPR - news) today announced a phenomenal response to the Linux version of JBuilder 3 Foundation Edition by the developer community. Since Inprise posted JBuilder 3 Foundation Edition last week, there have been more than double the number of downloads of the Linux version than of the Windows version of the product. In addition, Web traffic at the Inprise Web site has increased by four times above normal rate and is breaking the company's own records for page views and downloads.

The company announced the availability of the first JBuilder product to run on the Linux platform at the Java Business (SM) Conference in New York City on December 8. The product is available for free download at Inprise's Web site, www.borland.com/jbuilder.

''This overwhelming response proves that Java developers are very interested in a Java development tool for the Linux platform,'' said Dale Fuller, interim president and CEO of Inprise Corporation. ''The free download is part of Inprise's continuing commitment to the Linux platform and effort to provide customers with the solutions they need to conduct business on the Internet. This is not just a trial or demonstration version, but a production quality tool that Java developers can use now to benefit from the power, performance and productivity of JBuilder across multiple platforms, including Linux, Solaris and Windows operating systems.''

''I rely on JBuilder because it offers me a full suite of tools to build and deploy Internet-based applications in pure Java,'' said Jeff Bowen, senior software engineer for a leading Internet hosting and services company. ''JBuilder Foundation for Linux enables me to continue building powerful Web applications, in half the time that other Java tools, while helping to jump start our internal projects on the Linux platform.''

The release of JBuilder 3 Foundation comes in on the heels of the announcement of the Linux software development kit (SDK) available through a collaboration between Inprise and Sun Microsystems. The companies, with significant help from the Blackdown team, produced a beta version of the Java(TM) 2 Platform, Standard Edition (J2SE) for the Linux platform. The agreement enables programmers to develop and run applications based on the Java 2 platform and deploy them on Linux workstations and servers, as well as simplify moving existing Java applications to the Linux operating system (OS).

More on Interbase (quoting from IB newgroups)

"A brief recap:

Last Friday several top managers of resigned from InterBase because they finally
accepted that they did not have the full (any?) support from Dale Fuller the
current managing director of Inprise. This is fact, not rumour. It should be
read as a major vote of no confidence in the man who currently runs Inprise and
a warning signal to us all.

Subsequently, an unofficial announcement has been made that Inprise are entirely
discontinuing the InterBase product line, although they will honour existing
support agreements. A formal announcement is due, possibly on Thursday.

Where we are now:

This issue has hit the InterBase community particulary hard. However, several
points should be born in mind.

o InterBase contributes about 7.5% of the company turnover.
For some divisions of Inprise around the world the contribution
is significantly higher.

o InterBase is not one of the noddy development languages that
Borland has dropped in the past. It is fifteen years old and
is used by companies big and small, worldwide.

o Aside from the immediate impact on Inprise sales there will be
a major loss of credibility in Inprise. If they can kill InterBase,
what else will they kill?

o This issue is going to mark down the Inprise share price when
it is made public. It is not a good business decision."
