ATY has a strong and healthy earnings picture. Granted, one 'unusual item' (chromatics research acquisition) flatened their eps for fiscal 99, but all of that is completely absorbed now. There's no point second guessing strategic decisions in a company, the fat lady has not stood up, we don't know if aty is batting 1000 or 800 yet.

Investment gains are interesting in companies that are not showing a profit. I doubt if this extra us$34M or so is material to ATY's (very) robust health. Just as the chromatic thing should not be considered in terms of ATY's long-term picture, neither should rvst. (imho)

SJRB.to did have a big run up in 99 when they sold a small portion of their holdings in ATHM --- if you want to look at investment holdings, look closely at that one, (oh if you study their chart in yahoo, there was a split in sep99 and all sjrb.to owners get cjrb.to shares as well, so the drop isn't real.)

Anyone noticed that rimm reported earnings? rimm market cap is > atyt while revenue (and earnings) is < 1/10 ? When the market loves you, they really really adore you.

What do I think?

1. I think ATY is uniquely placed in this convergence of PC and TV, compared to the competition, they are even stronger in hdtv than they were with the ntsc/pal analog tv (and eveyone knows what happened there).

2. I think the persistent report about the ms xbox is compelling.

3. I think even based on existing sales and settop box, aty is worth looking into. The ms xbox thing, if true, could be the one thing that makes the market cast goo-goo eyes at atyt again. Next year could be exciting.

Once a company becomes part of your very long term core holdings and is 500%+ of what you paid for it, it becomes very hard to try to sell it all and pay the capital gains tax. Mind you, I got scared into unloading half my holdings earlier (which I have since bought back, and more) over what turned out to be unfounded rumours.

Most companies will reports earnings with and without unusual items.
