Let's face it: a free ISP is worth just what you pay for it. How much are all those deadbeats going to buy online anyway? AOL will retain all the upscale consumers who consider $20 a month pocket change.

Frank,
You are learned enough to know the difference between a tax payer subsidized monoploy and a highly competitive market driven company like AOL.
Why eight? There are already 100 of ISPs including the one by the biggest corporation in the world, yet AOL keeps rolling in.
That must say something about this management and their strategy.

linsol, your characterization of AOL is uncannily like that of the Bell System's during the late Seventies. And
then there came the Eighties...
