I was, indeed, thinking of the Golden Rule, but my comment was a little different. You see, the Golden Rule tells us to treat others as we would be treated. But that's not really satisfactory to the others, because they want to be treated as THEY want to be treated, not as WE want to be treated.

I think it's a crucial difference.

I realized this when I had a friend who treated me as he wanted to be treated, but I didn't appreciate it at all. I conceded that he was sincere, and he was treating me as he wanted to be treated, but I didn't like it. I didn't think it was just, and I didn't think it was fair. And I felt exploited.

Hence, my version of the Golden Rule.
