Lizzie, Ireland has changed radically in the last few years. While everything you may have heard about Dublin used to be true, it is really different now. The tech boom is so huge in Ireland that multinationals, with their own customs, are there in huge numbers. Not everyone is Catholic anymore; there is a lot of interest in the old Celtic culture and belief system. Birth control pills and condoms are readily available. You can even get a divorce!

I would not recommend moving to the really conservative parts of Ireland like Kerry and Donegal. The Church is still really strong there. But Dublin is a wild and bustling place--like a goldrush town--and Cork has a big gay and lesbian movement. Galway is also liberal. It has a lively theatre scene and a lot of pop and rock bands. These are the three university towns; like college towns anywhere you can find what you are looking for there.

Ireland is changing so fast because of the booming tech economy and the demise of the Church as a powerful governmental force, that what was happening just a few years ago is irrelevant to the situation now.
