From my perspective, it's best if the parties in a relationship attempt to negotiate what's due. That won't do much good for the people who are crushed by Attila the Hun/Sargon the Magnificent/Sulieman the Magnificent/Napoleon/Hitler ~ and so on. Still and all, these bad dudes couldn't destroy entire towns without serious help from some other bad dudes, who probably didn't care one iota about whether they left the toilet seat up or remembered their wives birthdays. Not to mention the Inquisition, child labor in the Industrial Revolution, and so on and so forth. So what to do? No clue, except to do the best we can.
